TAFE Outreach programs are closely aligned to the Federal Social Inclusion Agenda ensuring NSW education is accessible to people who face barriers to learning including geographical and social isolation, language and cultural factors, financial hardship, lack of educational confidence, being unaware of opportunities to learn, a disability or family commitments.

Participants

The program draws on residents of the Bonnyrigg Housing estate which is described as follows:

The estate has approximately 2,900 people with many residents on very low incomes and or are unemployed. The concentration of disadvantage at Bonnyrigg is manifest in poor social outcomes including very high rates of unemployment, relatively high crime rates and vandalism, poor educational and health outcomes and stigmatisation of social housing in the eyes of the wider communities. http://www.udia-nsw.com.au/html/39646.cfm

Participants are mainly women aged from late twenties through to late fifties. The age range accommodates intergenerational strategies which enrich opportunities for potential outcomes for community strengthening. English is the second language most students posing language barriers. Literacy and numeracy is generally poor as most have had limited formal education. Transport is another barrier for many of the students.
